Cryotherapy in Chicago | Lume Wellness

Cryotherapy Chicago

3 minute sessions

A quick but effective full-body service, cryotherapy uses ultra-low temperatures to promote several healing benefits. These include increased immunity and metabolism, as well as reduced pain and inflammation.

During your Chicago cryo spa session, your body's natural filtration system, including the kidneys, liver, and heart, actively circulates blood to eliminate toxins. Once the session concludes, vasodilation occurs, increasing your blood vessels up to four times their normal size. The purified blood, enriched with essential oxygen, nutrients, and enzymes, courses through your entire body, nourishing peripheral tissues. Book your appointment now at our cryo chamber in Chicago.

How it works

FIGHT OR FLIGHT MODE

While you are in the chamber the drop in temperature will lower skin surface temperature significantly. This causes your body to activate a central nervous system response and causes a release of endorphins ( "fight or flight" mode) that protects your internal organs by pushing blood to the core where it then recirculates.

BLOOD VESSEL GO TO WORK

As your blood vessels begin vasoconstriction (constricting), blood circulates on an internal tract. During this process, red blood cells are enriched with oxygen, nutrients, and enzymes. Toxins are then flushed from peripheral tissues.

RECOVERY BEGINS

After exiting the cryochamber, your body immediately begins to reheat itself, blood recirculates back to the skin's surface tissue, muscle tissues and joints. Endorphins and anti-inflammatory proteins are then released and toxins, lactic acid and metabolic waste are cleared.

FAQ

What does Cryotherapy do?

During your session, blood circulates through your natural filtration system (kidneys, liver and heart) and removes toxins and inflammatory properties from the body. After your session, your blood vessels dilate through a process called vasodilation in which blood vessels are dilated up to four times their normal state. Filtered blood, supercharged with oxygen, nutrients, and enzymes, flows through your body and to your peripheral tissue.

Cryotherapy has also been used as a tool for increasing metabolism. Cryotherapy exposes your body to extremely cold temperatures for a short period of time which can raise the body's metabolic rate as it works to heat back up again using a considerable amount of energy. Studies have shown that this can cause the body to ‘burn’ up to 800 calories following consistent, weekly cryotherapy treatment. That’s the equivalent of running for around 45 minutes or swimming for an hour!

You'll spend 3 minutes in the chamber, with a total of 10 minutes allotted for prep and recovery.

During a full body cryotherapy session, we suggest wearing undergarments.

Sensitive body parts will be covered with a facemask, ear muffs, gloves, socks, and shoes provided by Lume.

All jewelry or anything metal should be removed.

You should feel refreshed and energized after your cryotherapy session. Some people say they feel benefits immediately after a cryotherapy session, though research has shown that you will experience improved and cumulative benefits after a minimum of 10 sessions within a two or three week period.

Simply, yes.

Lume has a state of the art cryotherapy chamber that does not require Nitrogen. In standard cryotherapy chambers there is a risk of breathing in the nitrogen creating asphyxiation.

Due to the cold temperatures sensitive body parts should be covered with a face mask, ear muffs, gloves, and socks or slippers. Burning of the skin or frostbite can occur when proper attire protocol is not followed.

After careful examination, it is clear that cryotherapy is neither classified as a medical procedure nor purely a palliative treatment. While it does offer palliative benefits, it is also considered a therapeutic modality that aims to promote overall wellness.

Cryotherapy was developed by Dr. Toshiro Yamauchi, a renowned rheumatologist from Japan, in 1978. Initially, its primary purpose was to aid in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Yamauchi originally designed cryotherapy as a specific therapeutic approach for addressing the symptoms and management of this debilitating condition. However, as further research and experiments were conducted, it became evident that cryotherapy had a wide range of potential applications beyond rheumatoid arthritis. Scientists, over the course of subsequent decades, extensively studied and explored the various healing properties and benefits offered by cryotherapy.
